无论是现代的过去，还是前卫的现在，爵士乐似乎都与上海有着完美的默契。上海从来不缺爵士乐。经过几十年的发展，如今的爵士音乐早已突破传统，融合了电子音乐、民族音乐、摇滚音乐、新古典音乐等多种音乐元素。
事实上，在上海，爵士乐一直以其独特的方式存在。那些在夜晚发出柔和光线的爵士酒吧，那些背着包到处走的爵士歌手.酒吧和音乐密不可分。在上海，大大小小的音乐酒吧不计其数。各种风格吸引着不同的人前来，或妖娆，或性感，或激情，或动感.昏暗的灯光下，他们听着音乐，品味着。

老年爵士酒吧成立于1980年，是上海最著名的爵士乐队之一。在这里，你不仅可以欣赏到欧美三四十年代的爵士流行歌曲，还可以领略到上世纪的老上海风情：店内的布置是上世纪上海娱乐场所最常见的，木质沙宣八角桌，老式吊扇缓缓转动，顶部悬挂着几盏蜡烛形状的吊灯。用的乐器都是旧的，琴盖很多地方都被刷掉了，但所有成员常年穿着西装，全身心地投入其中。整个老爵士酒吧仿佛从上世纪三四十年代直接堕落到了今天的上海外滩，令人神往。

繁荣时期的爵士乐在上海的发展情况是怎么样的?
“爵士”乐在上海产生的原因分析：
1社会环境相对稳定，人民生活有了一定的改善。1912年前，中国仍处于半封建半殖民地社会，执政者思想的腐朽和封建君主专制压迫着广大劳苦大众，人们被笼罩在强权之下抬不起头。1912年中华民国建立，人民生活负担得到了相对减轻，政府着手交通、通讯等设施建设，在便利了人民出行、联络之外，也鼓励他们了解外面的世界，进一步纾解了人民多年以来束缚在脑中的陈旧思想，眼界得到了一定的拓宽。
2人民生活质量有所提高，文化消费相对增加。20世纪20年代起，民族经济的崛起和大量外资企业的涌入，使得上海的经济进入了“黄金时期”。人民的生活基本稳定、收入相对提高，商人和外国人的增多促使娱乐场所的生意日益红火，文化消费较之前有较大幅度的提升，促使从事娱乐服务行业者必须想方设法变化着花样吸引消费者。 1934年，作为中国流行音乐摇篮的明月社，在解散休整了一年后，又重起炉灶。在黎锦晖的召唤下，原来的班底又重回明月社的怀抱，但是不少知名演员已经签约电影公司。这时，由于电影业的迅速发展，很多歌舞演员都已以电影表演为事业中心，电影插曲也成为歌曲流行的最重要通道。再加上黎锦晖本身不善经营理财，所以明月社再次入不敷出，黎锦晖不惜拿出自己的稿费版税填补窟窿，最后不仅没有能拯救明月社，还遭受家庭破裂(妻子徐来离开)的打击。从1932年百乐门建成开始，歌舞厅逐渐成为时髦，有乐队歌星常驻。1934年，黎锦晖应杜月笙之邀，为即将开业的扬子饭店舞厅组建了一支完全由华人乐手组成的爵士乐队，这是中国乐坛第一支华人爵士乐队，名为“清风舞乐队”，黎锦晖还为乐队提供乐谱和歌星伴唱的歌曲，并编写舞曲。当时，黎锦晖致力于爵士乐的研究，他曾经把《特别快车》等多首流行歌曲编写成爵士风格，美国有一个爱灵顿公爵，也写了一个类似于《特别快车》的曲子。学者安德鲁·琼斯以为是黎锦晖抄袭了美国人的爵士乐，可是查证以后却发现，黎锦晖所作比爱灵顿公爵还早了一年。黎锦晖改编的流行歌曲特别为舞客喜欢，所以不少歌舞厅都来找黎锦晖要乐队谱，黎锦晖一一答应，有些甚至不收报酬，一时间，他在上海舞厅华人乐队中，享有很高的威信。自此，一大批歌手也随之在舞厅中成长，歌舞厅正式成为电台、唱片、电影插曲之外，流行歌曲传播的又一途径，也是歌手成名的又一渠道，比如欧阳飞莺就是偶然在仙乐斯演唱而走上职业歌手之路的。

CJW上海一共有两家CJW，一处在新天地、一处在外滩，他们所代表的内涵却是一样的：Cigga、Jazz、Wine（雪茄、爵士、酒），可以说是上海爵士酒吧中品位最高的。和普通意义上封闭狭隘的爵士酒吧不同，外滩的CJW，可以从50楼的高空一览浦东与外滩的迷人景致，而新天地的CJW，则裹在落地玻璃墙内，室内的一切都成为景致。这里的乐手非常大胆，喜欢将完美编曲的爵士乐和中国民乐结合起来，并曾在演出中加入二胡等民族乐器，令不少外国人为之疯狂。女声、萨克斯和鼓点伴随着雪茄和美酒的香气，一切极其迷人又极其自然。MichelleJZ Club虽然开业不久，也在不久前刚搬了新地方，但却成为上海最具影响力的酒吧之一。开店的老板是国内有名的贝司手，而到这里来的客人虽然不都是圈内人，但至少都是钟情于爵士与蓝调醇美味道的人。同时，这里还是上海一些著名爵士乐手和乐队的私人聚点，大家在结束各处的表演后，往往会在这里聚会，甚至也会免费上台来上一段。酒吧有两层，摒弃了以往爵士酒吧以古典装潢配以怀旧情调出现的风貌，以红为主的色调，非常能刺激乐手和听觉的感觉，人影的晃动都被笼罩在这种诡谲的气氛中，却显得一丝不苟，无比舒展，恰好配合着鬼魅声线的喑哑和身姿摇曳的缠绵。棉花俱乐部位于淮海路上的棉花俱乐部，在闹市中显得异常寂静，店面不算大，店内的布置也是美国乡村的味道，却显得非常内敛和深刻。店门口放着两个小号，明显是老板在标榜自己对爵士的爱，不过据说这的确是老板的心爱之物。店内的招待均是中式碎花斜襟小褂子，墙上挂满的则是爵士大师相片，而舞台的布景又是纯净的蓝天白云，看似矛盾的一切却又显得极其自然。乐手们在这样的氛围中恍如隔世的表演，飘飘然欲入云霄。阿彬老年爵士酒吧不能不提和平饭店的老年爵士酒吧，这里的老年爵士乐队成立于1980年，可以说是上海最负盛名的爵士乐队之一，酒吧还在1996年被评为世界最佳酒吧之一。店内的布置不是欧美的，而是上个世纪上海娱乐场所最常见的，木质的沙逊八角桌，老式吊扇不紧不慢地转动着，顶上还吊着几盏蜡烛状的大吊灯，桌上的烛灯也显得温情之极。乐队成员所使用的乐器，都是旧的，钢琴盖上有许多地方都已经掉漆了，不过每位成员无不是一年四季的西装革履，全情投入。而且这里专门为客人提供点歌本，歌曲都是上个世纪的老歌。整个老年爵士酒吧，仿佛就直接从上个世纪三四十年代，直接落到了如今的上海外滩一般，让人着迷。 新天地的CJW和Brown Sugar，都有不错的演出。在和平饭店一楼，有一个解放前就演出爵士乐的老爷子们组成的乐队。在桃江路有个爱尔兰人酒吧，叫O'Malley's也有不错的演出。以前的话，我一定会推荐大沽路上的Beedees，上海大部分表演的外国乐手，下班后，或者有时候抽个周6，聚集在这里做Jam Night。气氛很热闹。在田子坊有一家melting pot 在泰康路288号。有一家叫fennel的酒吧餐厅在镇宁路上，也有演出。酒水也还可以。有家叫弹指之间的，地址忘了，中国人的地盘了。在金陵东路有日本酒吧，叫“搅”。里面的Blues是很棒的，吉他手叫Known，泰国人，非常厉害。
